S.W.I.F.T.
Silicon carbide Wafer Impulsive Force Tester
SWIFT was a testing machine for Silicon Carbide Wafers built for the Army Research Laboratory to support basic research in semiconductor materials for power electronics. A rectangular wafer was held between two ceramic blocks, to which a compressive load was applied by a piezo stack. A capacitive displacement sensor provided position feedback to implement closed loop, PID control of position. The heat tolerance of the ceramic and the open side path allow the introduction of a laser for simultaneous thermal loading.
